DID YOU KNOW?

  • Compared with people who are housed, homeless individuals are more likely to have infections, dermatological problems, and decayed teeth due to lack of proper hygiene care.
  • A major concern of an unsheltered person is to keep their feet dry and clean. After prolonged exposure to rain or wet shoes, skin becomes waterlogged and is more prone to infection. It is hard to turn around an aggravated infection without medical assistance. For this reason, body wipes and socks are highly-requested items to maintain foot health.
  • Hygiene products are not items that can be purchased by SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) so they are not as readily accessible.
  • Identification documents can become an obstacle for homeless individuals when they are lost, expired, or there are outstanding fines that need to be cleared to renew the ID. When a homeless person loses their ID or if the ID is no longer valid, they may lose access to a primary care physician and any prescription refills needed. Furthermore, they can’t receive SNAP funding or social security benefits. Outreach workers will prioritize assistance with ID for these reasons.
  • In most US states, Hawaii included, a person in need can dial 211 to connect with local social services and get referrals on emergency housing.
  • Throughout Hawaii state, there are numerous emergency and transitional shelters that serve the homeless. Oahu shelters can be found at: VACANCY GRID 2024- PARTNERS IN CARE The website shows what types of shelters exist and how many beds are currently available.
  • Caseworkers use a vulnerability index tool to assess the severity of a person’s needs, the level of prioritization and type of housing that is the best match when someone seeks shelter.
  • If a shelter is “low barrier”, it typically means that it is an emergency shelter with minimal restrictions on who can be served by the program.
  • Shelters may have strict rules e.g: sobriety requirements, curfews, mandatory meetings and programs, early lights-out. These can sometimes become barriers to someone saying yes to shelter.

We directly asked numerous unsheltered individuals what items would be most appreciated. Here are a few responses:

  • “Feminine hygiene products are not something that I always have. I think any woman out here would appreciate tampons, pads or body wipes.”
  • “Socks! It helps if they are black and of good quality.”
  • “We don’t always have access to a shower, so it is nice to have a pack of cleansing wipes.”
  • “I most appreciate it when someone smiles at me directly and says hello. I received a care pack last week and the person who gave it to me also gave me a hug. That was pretty memorable.”
